The acceptance of another state of emergency by the Adamawa State
Governor Barrister James Bala Ngillari has been condemned by most
people in the state.
According to respondents, the acceptance of the proposed state of
emergency the fourth in a row has been described as uncalled for since
the desired effect has not been felt.
“Rather than achieve what it is meant for, the emergency has rather
created the chance for the insurgent Boko Haram group to gain more
grounds”, they insist.
Governor James Bala Ngillari had while in Abuja during the weekend
told journalists that he was appealing to the National Assembly to
approve another state of emergency.
Some prominent personalities who spoke against the extension of
another state of emergency include Dr. Umar Ardo who says he greatly
opposes it adding that it was needless saying “we can achieve what we
want to achieve without it”.
According to him, right from the onset he had never supported the
imposition of the emergency rule in the state as he noted, it will
only lead to the infringement of the fundamental rights of the people.
“Regardless of whether the emergency rule has been extended or not as
demanded by the governor, it is very glaring that the conduct of
elections in 2015 will not be possible in the state”, the PDP stalwart
pointed out.
Also in his comments, one time zonal chairman of the North East All
Progressives congress (APC) Dr. Umar Duhu described the Governors call
as very selfish, unilateral which does not in anyway, reflect the
demands of the people of the state.
“From the reaction of the ordinary people on the street, the emergency
rule was most undesirable as it has only inflicted a lot of hardship
on the people”, says Duhu.
Dr. Umar Duhu expressed the hope that the legislature in Adamawa State
will not support the extension knowing they were representing their
people who sent them.
