Zimbabwe’s annualised inflation dropped to 0.09 percent in September after easing 0.06 percentage points over the August figure, according to latest data released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) on Wednesday.ZIMSTAT attributed the decline in the year-on-year inflation rate from 0.15 percent to a reduction in prices of foodstuffs, clothing and foot wear, housing and furniture and equipment as well as water and electricity charges between September 2013 and last month.
The data showed that the year-on-year food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation stood at minus 2.95 percent in September, reflecting the deflationary environment that has characterised the Zimbabwean economy for most of this year.
Zimbabwe’s annual inflation has remained below one per cent after the economy went into deflation in the first half of the year on the back of depressed consumer demand resulting from a gripping liquidity crisis.
The indicative month-on-month inflation, which measures the actual movement of prices during September 2014, was pegged at minus 0.01 percent after gaining 0.3 percentage points on the August rate.
