History was made on Saturday September 13th when the apex Igbo socio- cultural organisation elected her pioneer women leadership with Hon.(Mrs) Adimachukwu Calista Nkiruka emerging the National Woman Leader in a keenly contested election where she trounced a former Commissioner of Works in Anambra state Hon. (Chief) Mrs Chika Hephzibah Ibeneme. While Mrs Obianuju Nnamdi-Nwanneka from Rivers State emerged as the Deputy National Woman Leader.
In her acceptance speech after her declaration as the winner of the contest, the New woman leader who was a former Chairperson of Nnewi North Local Government Area thanked the Ohanaeze Ndigbo hierarchy under the leadership of Prince Gary Enwo-Igariwey for creating a platform and an enabling electoral environment for the Igbo woman to make her contributions. She promised to carry everyone along in the march toward bettering the lot of the Igbo woman.
The astute administrator and great mobiliser of women known popularly as Mmilioma, also enjoined her opponents in the contest to join her and other members of elected women leadership to fashion out ways to take Igbo land to greater heights, with special focus on making sure the labours of Igbo-Heroes past who were the real player in the struggle for Nigerian Independence.
It should be recalled that an earlier election for the women wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo on the 6th of April 2014 was truncated when some thugs invaded the Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Secretariat Enugu venue of the election causing it to be postponed till the end of the National Confab which the principal officer of the apex body were delegates.
