As the security situation in Rivers State battles to return to normalcy following the aborted impeachment saga to remove the Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, skirmishes at select local government areas remain potential violent hotspot. Information available to 247ureports.com indicate a group of angry cultists numbering thirty [30] armed with dangerous weapons attacked the police headquarters at Abua Odual Local Government Area in the late morning hours of Wednesday, September 10, 2014 resulting in injuries.
As gathered, the group of cultists were approaching the police headquarters in attempt to free one of their members who was arrested recently by the police for cult related activity. As the cultist neared the police station, they opened fire at the station. The police officers at the station immediately returned fire – and the gun duel ensued.
The River State Commissioner for health and officials of the health ministry who were at the Abua council secretariat close to the police station for an Ebola sensitization campaign scampered for safety – in fear of their lives.
When 247ureports.com contacted the LGA chairman, he indicated that the number of casualty is not certain but he added that it was safe to assume that many were injured. He added also that some police men may have been injured in the process.
