… Says, It’s Breeding Criminals
The people of Obiti in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State have cried out to Governor Rochas Okorocha to come to their aide by building a secondary school in the community.
The people also appealed to the state government to fulfill its promise of ensuring that all communities in the state have electricity.
Speaking at the country home Hon. Donatus Ozoemena, the deputy speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly in Mgbidi, Oru West LGA, the woman leader of Obiti community, Mrs. Joyce Odunze lamented that since married in that community over 20 years ago, she had never seen any secondary school around.
She said the youths of the community who desired to acquire secondary school education, have to travel over six kilometers distance to communities like Umuapu.
As a result of this, she said, most of the youths who finished primary schools in the community did not have the opportunity to attend secondary schools.
She lamented that this situation had only succeeded in breeding hard criminals from the community who go about maiming and terrorisng the community and its neighbours.
Mrs. Odunze lamented that the greater majority of the thousands of youths in the community never attended secondary schools not because they did not want to go but because they did not have the wherewithal to attend schools in very distant communities.
The woman leader appealed to the deputy speaker to use his position position to get Governor Okorocha to build any secondary school that would take the youths back to school after primary education, adding that crimes would reduce if there is any secondary school to take care of the youth.
She used the opportunity to call on the deputy speaker to also get the state government to assist them to have electricity and be like other communities in the area.
Obiti community is playing host to one of the largest Rubber Plantations in Nigeria and is one the oil producing communities in the state.
It should be noted that Obiti community is one of the highest volatile areas. It has been serving as a ready market for political thugs to some politicians.
Reports have it that the community is one of the area in Ohaj Egbema LGA where teenage pregnancy is on the increase and this is attributed to lack of secondary school in the area as little girls who finished primary schools stays at home to help out in the farm.
