.One Police,BZM member dead in gun duel.
Leader of Pro-Biafra group, Biafra Zionists Movement, BZM, Barrister Benjamin Onwuka, who has been on the wanted list of Enugu State Police command was arrested Thursday, haven launched another attack on the Enugu State Broadcasting Service, ESBS, in a failed attempt to make a broadcast.
The incident occurred at about 6am.
The same group had attacked the Government House, Enugu on March 8, holding the place to ransom for nearly four hours.
The BZM members, who were led to the television house by Onwuka, killed a police sergeant and wounded another Inspector who were among a four-man police patrol team that rushed to the scene to stop them.
A member of the group was shot dead by the police team who dislodged the plan of the hoodlums said to be over twenty.
Heavily armed mobile policemen drafted to the scene arrived after the BZM members had left but an eyewitness said two members were later arrested while some passersby were also arrested for questioning.
Onwuka and many of his men had escaped before the policemen arrived, according to the eyewitness.
Onwuka’s mission to the state television house was to make a live broadcast haven declared himself leader of the new Biafran Republic last year.
Barrister Benjamin Onwuka, leader Biafra Zionist Movement,
had claimed responsibility for the invasion of the Enugu Government House in March during which some guards were injured.
The police arrested and arraigned five members of the group who were remanded in Enugu prison.
The Police later declared Onwuka and his members wanted, splashing a N5 Million bounty as reward for information leading to his arrest but none of them was arrested before today’s invasion of the ESBS.
However, shortly after, police sources said that the BZM leader, Benjamin Onwuka and 12 members of his group have been arrested by a team of security operatives who gave them a hot chase while trying to escape into Independence Layout of the Coal City. Â
The State Police Spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, confirmed Onwuka’s arrest in text message saying, “Please we shall give you details of the incident as soon as we are through with investigations.
“Onwuka and some of his arrested members are with us and we want to get more facts from them about the incident.”
