THE Primate of Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh has accused the Nigerian government of insensitivity to the poor in the country which according him has led to dishonesty among the citizenry.

Speaking Wednesday in Abuja while playing host to members of Family Reform Initiative (FRI) led by its co-ordinator, Ambassador Chukwuma Olisa who paid him a working visit, the Primate pointed out that the inhuman treatment of the government of the day to the masses has contributed largely to the present value decadence in the system.

Earlier, Amb. Chukwuma Olisa has noted that environmental factor is responsible for most of the family challenges and issue of dishonesty in the country.

He said statistics have shown that 60% of Nigerians live in improper accommodation noting: “imagine a father, mother and grown up children living in one room. What type of morals could be developed in such environment?”.

He said Family Reform Initiative is meant to fashion out ways of tackling ‘human factor’ which is responsible for various family ills.

The group he said which was launched in 2012 has its emphasis on foundation programmes with proper home upbringing.

According to him, “presently we are handling children nurture and reform programmes in schools to introduce family values, moral instructions and children interest in housework.

“We have children reform programmes on Saturdays for difficult children. We also have foundation programmes in Mathematics nd English language aimed at improving children academically.

“Our desire is to restore the spirit of honesty in our children. Its disheartening to behold the level of dishonesty among our children and parents are not helping matters either”

Responding, the Primate noted that government has not done enough to better the lives of the masses.

He noted that for instance, Abuja is the only modern city in the world that does not have provisions for the poor, saying such anomaly has made many people to steal from the government treasury so as to afford the living standard in the city.

According to him, “the issue of honesty in the society is a big problem and government will take major part of the blame. Tell me an honest civil servant who can afford to live in Abuja city, even a civil servant with PhD who is living on his salary cannot afford the to live in Abuja city.

“People crowd the satellite areas in Abuja because of the limitations they have, not that they would not want to live in the city. There is no modern city in the world that does not have provision for the poor except Abuja”.

The clergy maintained that the government has a part to play in ensuring that honesty becomes our best policy.

“The issue of dishonesty among the people is very complex and the government must do all within its powers to reverse the trend, I am not justifying evil, but the system must pay attention to the issues that affect the masses. Nigerians are not bad people but they are struggling with contradictions.

“Government should provide all social amenities and have better packages for civil servants, then anyone that steals should face the wrath of the law”.
