Suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, at the weekend faulted the financial recklessness allegation against him, adding that contradictory figures have been given as monies spent under the CBN educational intervention.
He expressed surprise over the accusation that he spent N160 billion under the educational intervention scheme, adding that the bank “judiciously spent N56 billion under the educational intervention. An average of N11 billion is being spent every year for five years in 27 universities and six polytechnics across the nation.”
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi spoke while receiving a service to humanity award from the Northern chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) in Kano at the weekend. Also honoured by the group was Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya.
The suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria wondered why the federal government would accuse him of financial recklessness based on the educational intervention scheme of the bank, when according to him, it is fully aware of it.
“When ASUU strike was on, the federal government came to me to find out how CBN can assist in resolving the matter; we then offered to erect some structures in various universities across the nation. That decision helped in convincing ASUU to call off its strike, because the intervention spans across 27 universities and six polytechnics nationwide. I was therefore surprised to read that the intervention made by CBN amounts to financial recklessness,” he said.
