Policemen from Abayi Police Division, Aba Abia State have arrested four men suspected to members of a kidnapping gang terrorizing residents of Aba, Abia state.
The suspects operating with a tricycle with Registration number, Abia UNC 117 VX whose identities are still being kept secret as at the time of this report were arrested by policemen on a stop and search operation led by one Udeh Chukwu who were on stop and search operation in the area.
A police source told 247ureports.com that a battle axe suspected of being one of the weapons they use in their operations was recovered from the gang.
The source added that following reports linking the activities of kidnappers in the city by a group of unknown men operating with tricycles, police divisions under the Aba Area Command intensified their patrol and engaged in a stop and search operation on tricycle operators.
According to him, “We have received several cases about kidnapping of residents in Aba which were carried out by group of people using tricycle. Some of the people who have been kidnapped and rescued in recent times, told us that what the kidnappers do is that they will park their tricycle a little distance away from their victim’s compound to avoid being suspected.
“As their target attempts driving into his/her compound, the group will surface from their hideout and attack the person and whisk him away the victim.
“As part of our efforts to stop crime before it happens, we started this stop and search operation on tricycle operators and passengers as soon as it is 7pm every day.
“On April 27, during a stop and search operation, the patrol team on suspicion conducted a search on all the passengers aboard the tricycle where a battle axe was discovered on them. The driver of tricycle and other three passengers were arrested and detained after they failed to give reasonably answers of the battle axe found on them,” the source stated.
