An imminent news blackout will be beclouding the people of Imo State if the state government’s plan to relocate newspaper vendors to the Relief Market is anything to go by.
The government said it has concluded plans for the relocation of all vendors including newspaper sellers in Owerri Municipal to the Relief Market.
This was contained in a notification signed by the state Commissioner for Planning and Economic Development, Mrs. Adaora Ijezie and issued to the newspaper vendors on Tuesday, 6th May, 2011.
According to the notification, the relocation was state government’s new policy of “Imo My Pride” meant for decongestion of Owerri Municipality of illegal display of goods in front of shops and in-between buildings and shops.
The notification therefore requested the vendors to remove every of their goods not contained in shops on or before 7th of May, 2014 as such goods would be considered government property after the expiration of the date.
It also requested the vendors to go to Relief Market to pick a shop built by the state government for free.
The notification has not gone down well with the vendors who have now vowed to go on strike to resist the government plans
