A Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Mobile court sitting at Okpala in Ngor Okpala local council of Imo state has fined 32 motorists various sums of money for road traffic violations.
The Ngor Okpala Unit of the agency had mounted an early morning special road check operation along the over busy Aba —Owerri highway.
Motorists arrested for various traffic offences were taken to the mobile court sitting within the premises of FRSC Ngor Okpala and presided over by Magistrate Emeka Charles Ukachukwu.
The offences for which the motorists were fined include driving with worn out tyres, without fire extinguishers, broken windscreens, without seat belts, dangerous driving; among others.
The mobile court found 32 drivers guilty and who after pleading guilty, was fined between N2, 000 to N20, 000 which the Magistrate said should serve as deterrent to others.
In a chat with newsmen after the exercise, the FRSC Unit Commander, Mr. Augustine Anya Kalu said the exercise was part of his agency’s efforts in ensuring accident free ride on the highways.
Kalu said the exercise was used to equally check certain traffic offences by motorists like driving without fire extinguishers, seat belts and dangerous driving, broken windscreens and expired tyres.
The commander added that the unit had at various times, mounted public campaigns on the need for the people to obey traffic laws and maintain highway codes.
He regretted that despite such public campaigns, many motorists ran foul of the law, warning offenders would be made to face the law.
Kalu who stated that his Unit has ensured a 15% reduction in road accidents by 25 percent through massive use of breathalyzer, stressed that the convictions would serve as deterrent to other road users.
