The House of Representatives on Tuesday handed its Committees on Works and Army a month to investigate the circumstances behind the non-implementation of the construction of Doma Military Battalion in Nasarawa State, recommend appropriate measures to overcome the challenge, and report back to the House.
This follows a motion raised under matters of urgent public importance by Hon. Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, who noted that the sum of N100 million was
appropriated in the 2014 Appropriation Act for the construction of the battalion.
He expressed worry that the contract for the project has not yet been awarded for the project to commence.
He observed that the essence of the project is to boost security in the senatorial district, which comprises Doma, Lafia, Awe, Keana and Obi and the
neighbouring towns of Guma, Gwue Wes, as well as Agatu in Benue State.
Onawo particularly expressed worry that the essence of the project may be defeated, if urgent measure is not taken to ensure timely implementation of the project.
In a similar development, the House has mandated its Committee on Security to summon the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, National Security Adviser, retired Colonel Dasuk Sambo and the minister of defence, Aliyu Gusau, to explain the indiscriminate massacre of over 200 people in Maru and Zurmi local government areas of Zamfara State.
This was sequel to a motion raised under matters of urgent public importance raised by Hon. Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau, who noted that over 30 people were ambushed and killed in the towns of Yar-Tsaba in Zurmi LGA.
He further observed that over 200 innocent citizens were mercilessly killed in Yar-Galadima village of Maru LGA by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Saturday, April 5.
Shehu-Gusau, who observed that the group of attackers was fast becoming more coordinated and, warned that the group could
turn into another organised terror group, if it is not quickly terminated.
“(This) can pose additional threat to the security challenge in the country,” he added.
He urged the House to mandate the Ministry of Defence to consider locating an army barracks in the affected local government areas to forestall recurrences.
