Over nine members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, arrested by Joint Security Task Force in the commercial city of Onitsha have been granted bail by an Onitsha Chief Magistrate court.
Among those arrested by the security agents included the MASSOB Regional Administrator in charge of Awka South, Chief Arinze Igbani and eight others who were on their way to attend funeral service of their late member.
The MASSOB members were later arraigned in court and charged with conspiracy to commit felony and unlawful society as well as threat to public peace in suit Number M/292c/2014.
However, the suspects when arraigned in the Onitsha Chief Magistrate court were granted bail by the Chief Magistrate, Mr. Mike Oknonkwo who adjourned the matter to later date in May, 2014 for continuation.
Addressing journalists yesterday, the Regional Administrator of Awka South Region, Chief Arinze Igbani who spoke through the Regional Director for Information, Mr. Paul Okoye said their arrest was another clamp down on innocent MASSOB members by the state government.
He narrated their ordeals in the hands of the security agents who arrested them on their way to Ezinifite to attend the burial of their late member, adding that apart from other humiliating treatments in the hands of the security agencies, the police refused to arraign them in court for several days.
