Hon. Ezenwa Onyewuchi, member Representing Owerri Federal Constituency of Imo state in the House of Representatives, has bidden the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) goodbye following his recent resignation from the party but the ripple effect of his action has continued to resonate among the rank and file of the party.
Members of the party especially those from Owerri Federal Constituency who spoke to 247ureports.com on condition of anonymity are worried that the lawmaker’s defection could be the proverbial straw that has broken the camel’s back in view of the fact that the few remaining leaders of the party could be tempted to toe the same line which many prominent leaders of the party had taken in the past.
A member of the State interim executive who craved anonymity maintained that the loss of the lawmaker who he described as a dedicated and committed party member and loyalist of the Gov. Rochas Okorocha has sent very wrong signals about the APC to the general public, adding that more questions than answers have trailed the defection even as he warned of looming -political dangers if proactive steps were not taken to address issues responsible for these defections.
Speaking in similar vain, a zonal officer of the party in Owerri zone expressed shock that the leadership of the party in the State and Okorocha were sitting idly while elected and appointed officials of the APC decamped en masse to the PDP few months to 2015 election, saying that the party may be badly depleted and weakened before the battle of 2015 gathers momentum.
According to him, rather than diminish, the APC needed to be shored up by the governor and State leaders ahead of the next round of elections, considering the fact that the opposition parties were gearing up to give the party a run for its money in the governorship election.
Continuing, he called for the enthronement of internal democracy in the party using the ongoing congress especially against the backdrop that it was the alleged handing of party structure in Owerri North to those close to the first family that prompted the defection of the lawmaker, even as he stressed that failure to adhere to democratic principles and tenets could spell more disaster for the party in the State.
It would be recalled that before Onyewuchi’s defection many senior members of the party in the State dumped the government of Okorocha as well as the party for PDP with many of them saying the APC could not provide them the conducive environment they needed to actualize their political ambitions.
