The Executive Secretary of Ife East local government,Dauda Ayoola and two other suspects have been arrested over the killing at Ile Ife of an 80 year old leader of the Peoples Democratic Party during the recently concluded review of voters register in Osun state.
Those arrested alongside the council boss include Tajudeen Lawal and Ganiyu Lawal. Reports from the state revealed that the trio were accused of complicity in the murder and were consequently transferred to Abuja for further interrogation.
An 80-year-old chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ile-Ife, identified as Taiwo Ogundele was assassinated at Okiti area of the town, while four others were seriously injured. Ogundele who was a leader of the PDP in Ife East Local Government Area of the state was said to have been dragged to a secluded area at the back of his house by people suspected to be political thugs and was shot severally in the stomach and part of his private part.
The son of the deceased politician, Adeleke Ogundele, who narrated the incident said late Ogundele was lured out of his residence at 11.30 p.m. by some politicians who had earlier threatened him earlier in the day while the voters’ registration exercise was going on at his Okerewe ward 02.
The chairman of the PDP in the council area, Mr Omololu Olusegun explained that some politicians in the area had threatened to kill him for his loyalty to a chieftain of the PDP in the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore. He also disclosed that four notable members of the PDP in the area were also allegedly injured by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the voters’ registration exercise.
The case was then reported at the Area command’s office of the Nigeria Police Force in Ile-Ife. A source at the police headquarters in Abuja confirmed that the arrest was made and that suspects are already in custody.
