Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital woke up to find their phones without GSM services as military authority ordered a total shut down of all telecommunications lines.

The military said it was a strategy being used to combat the Boko Haram terrorists.

Spokesman of the 7-Division of the Nigeria Army, Col Muhammed Dole told Newsmen that the shut down was “deliberate”.

Residents of Borno State only had their phone services restored on the 3rd of December, 2013 after the military had, last year, grounded all telecommunications services for six months.

According to Col Dole,  “The development is strategic in the renewed vigour by the military to tackle the terrorists effectively”.

“We all know the inconveniences that this might brought, but it is a necessary and temporary measure that will not take long time”, said the military spokesman.
