Yet to be identified arsonists have set ablaze the campaign office of the All Progressives Congress Senator Ibrahim Gobir, located on Western Bye-pass Road, in the northern Nigerian city of Sokoto.
The office, a block of six rooms, was partially razed by the attackers that struck in the early hours of the day.
Senator Ibrahim Gobir who represents Sokoto East Senatorial District, expressed shock at the incident, which he described as “barbaric and heinous’’, according to a statement issued by his Special Assistant, Alhaji Almustapha Hamza.
He advised Nigerians against “politics of violence, chaos and destruction’’ and also appealed to his supporters to remain calm and to continue to be law abiding.
Senator Ibrahim Gobir said he lost property worth “about N15 million,’’ and regretted that many sensitive items like computers and stationery were burnt.
Alhaji Shuaibu Gambo, Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident, adding that the security guard was being detained by the police.
“We are detaining him for further interrogation; we want to ensure a thorough investigation into this incident,”he said.
