Anambra: Gov. Obiano urge Rectors, Provosts to find solution for Poly Lecturers’ strike

The new Governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano on Tuesday urged the Rectors of Polytechnic and Provosts of College of Education to find a way of solving the lingering strike actions by Polytechnic lecturers in Nigeria.

Governor Obiano make the urge while   declaring the127th Regular Meeting of Council of Heads of Polytechnic and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria (COHEADS) open at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko,  Anambra state.

According to him, he said that the continued strike action has altered academic calendar and rendered the students incapacitated in their area of study.

The governor, who was represented by the deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke   said that endless industrial actions had adversely disrupted the academic calendar in the tertiary institution in Nigeria and discouraged serious scholarship among the students.

“Therefore, I urged you to make the resolution of outstanding issues that could lead to further strike action a priority of this conference,’’ he said. No country that pays scant regard to her youths has ever attained true greatness. We all have a role to play to give shape and form to the dreams of the Nigerian youths,’’ he said.

Earlier the Chairman COHEAD, Dr. Kabir Matazu said they held the meeting to address issues that affect the union with a view to proffering solutions among which is to find solution to the strike action embarked upon by ASUP which he said has paralysed the tertiary institutions in the country.

Dr. Metazu further called on members of COHEAD and other staff of the polytechnic and Colleges of Technology to come together to form a formidable block that could help them fight as a group, adding “let us sit down and organize ourselves to dismantle and form of discrimination in Polytechnic and other educational institutions in the country.

The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Prof Godwin Onu while welcoming members of COHEAD said the association shall discus among other  issues that affect technical and vocation education in the country as panacea to sustainable development of the country.
