Ciego de Avila, Cuba, Feb 24 (Prensa Latina) A park called “El arañero” has opened in this central Cuban region, paying tribute to the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, commemorating the first anniversary of his death on March 5th.
The park was built on land belonging to the Faculty of Medical Sciences in the city of Moron, northern Ciego de Avila, at the initiative of Cuban and foreign students participating in the worldwide campaign “Por aqui paso Chavez” (Chavez Passed by Here).
A young Venezuelan, Robinson Perez, told Prensa Latina that the park is located in the same place where the solidarity brigade that bears the name of the Latin American leader, comprised of students from Honduras, Bolivia, Mexico, Argentina and Tanzania, was established.
Some 137 Venezuelans are studying medicine, health technologies, education, law, physical culture in Ciego de Avila, whose homonymous capital is located 430 kilometers east of Havana. They are in Cuba thanks to a collaborative agreement signed between Cuba and Venezuela, Perez said.
Also as a tribute to Chavez, the population in Ciego de Avila screened films from the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) and held talks and lectures about Chavez’ life and work.
The campaign also includes meetings with Ciego de Avila collaborators from different sectors who have worked in Venezuela, and a discussion about the book, The Chavez Code.
