Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Okwuonu, has lauded President Goodluck Jonathan’s achievements in the power and agricultural sectors of the economy.

In an interview with our correspondent in Aba, Okwonu said, “Jonathan has done quite well since the inception of his administration. One of the areas he has done marvelously well is power. I know that past administrations had worked on power but when Jonathan came to power he didn’t jettison what the past leaders did but continued to work on power generation and distribution, and today power has been fully privatized and this will generate competition and better services”.

“Another area the president has done well is the agricultural sector. The input he has made in the area of rice cultivation, if that tempo is sustained, believe me that in the near future, Nigeria will become a rice exporting country. Also, since he came into power we have not witnessed incessant scarcity of petroleum products. That policy is quite commendable.

According to him, “revival of the rail system is another area in which the president deserves to be commended. If that is properly done, it will ease a lot of pressure on our roads, even the transportation of petroleum products. I encourage him to sustain the efforts.

On the debate on whether Jonathan deserves a second term or not, the medical practitioner urged those opposed to Jonathan’s second term bid to provide a better alternative.

“The president’s ambition to run for a second term is very legal and like every other Nigerian, he is free to present himself for that position. If anybody has anything against him, let him present a better alternative. It is not something we should kill ourselves about. If any group thinks that Jonathan is not the right candidate let them present a better option so that Nigerians can weigh the options. I think that Jonathan deserves the right to vie for the position and there should be no noise about it.”
