Some minute after a security meeting hold at Onitsha Area Command, Anambra State on Tuesday afternoon,a Joint Security agents made up of Police with a sister Local Vigilante group in same Onitsha arrested two suspected robbers who was allegedly specialized in terrorizing the inhabitants of the commercial city of Onitsha
The two suspects who gave their names as Ezekiel Nwankwo from Onueke in Ebonyi State and Chinedu Agbaeziko from Ezzagu also in Ebonyi State were caught while robbing their victims of GSM phone with other valuables along Modebe Avenue by Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Odoakpu, Onitsha.
According to our source, the suspects who operated on a motorcycle, had sneaked into a GSM accessories shop and ordered its owner to relinquish all the handsets cash to them which he did, but on a second thought, the shop owner noticed the type of Gun their with (local made pistol) and picked some courage in dragging it with them which eventually call the attention of the security agent present.
The source stated that as he was still dragging the the pistol with them, the joint police and vigilante team arrived the scene and apprehended the suspects before they could flee.
They suspects were later driven in a police patrol van to Police Area Command Headquarters, Onitsha with their pistol.
The Police Area Commander, Mr. Benjamin Wordu confirmed the arrests and ordered the patrol team to hand the suspects over to the state Special Anti-Robbery Squad Headquarters, Awkuzu, for more investigations.
One of the suspects who confessed to the crime, said he has been a motor conductor for seven years and pleaded with the police not to kill him or else his aged mother would not be able bear the consequences, while the other suspect kept shouting that his father died of motor accident, while his mother is currently lying at a psychiatric hospital, as a result of the shock of his father’s death.
During the meeting with other security agencies, including the Army, the Navy, Civil Defence, Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, the vigilance groups, transition chairmen of Onitsha North and Onitsha South Local Government Areas, as well as the Divisional Police Officers, DPOs under the Area Command, the Area Commander, Wordu had highlighted the importance of synergy in combating crime during this yuletide season.
Wordu pleaded with all stakeholders in Onitsha to assist the patrol teams with adequate logistics to enable them maintain a 24-hour patrol of all nooks and crannies of the commercial city, to ensure a crime-free society.
