Nnewi the home town of the Labour Party governorship candidate in the Anambra state Gubernatorial election, Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, was agog with the presence of Nigeria`s Ex-super Eagles and international footballers, who arrived the ancient city to take part in a friendly football match at the famous Beverly hills International football pitch in support of the labour party governorship candidate.
The ex-super eagles international players who stormed Nnewi for the fiesta included such names as Kanu Nwankwo, Emmanuel Okocha, Taribo West, Friday Eboh, Bright Omokaro, Mutiu Adepoju, Samson Siasia, Austin Eguavon, Friday Elaho, Festus Odidi, Oliver Ndigwe, Uche Okechukwu, Victor Agali and Emeka Ezeogu.
Others included Ifeanyi Okagbue, Uche Humphery, Everatus Okoye, Tochukwu Nwachukwu, Uche Obiekwe, Kinsley Madueke, Chima Iwuoha, Uchendu Chidozie and a host of others.
Doing what they know best during the match that was kicked off by the Labour Party Gubernatorial candidate Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah at 2 pm Friday 2013, the players kept the huge crowd of spectators spellbound with their world renowned mathematical strokes.
Mr Kanu Nwankwo who displayed what made him the grand master of the round leather game in Arsenal dribbled in the first two goals of the game that ended 5 goals for the Ex-super Eagles men and 3 goals for the Nnewi selected footballers they fought with.
It proved really a happy moment for the crowd of spectators some of whom were seeing for the first time their favorite footballers in flesh and blood, as they never allowed Mr Emmanuel Okocha, the famous J. J Okocha any moment to leave the pitch throughout the ninety minutes duration of the game.
Speaking to Journalists at the Beverly Hills International football pitch, Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah the Labour Party governorship candidate for Anambra state who made event possible by pulling in these world renowned footballers to Nnewi said it is a thing of joy for the people of Nnewi to see these great players in flesh and blood and playing in the ancient city, adding that he brought this as part of his plan to keep the city and people of Anambra State happy.
He further said that Anambra is known to have produced great sportsmen in the past and great talents are abound waiting to be discovered and harnessed . The subsequent governors have continually neglected this sector that will keep our youths busy and another means of alleviating poverty among the populace. It is worthy of note that great sports men like Emma Okala, Godwin Ezeani, Mary Onyali and current Chelsea player Jon Mikel Obi to mention a few are from Anambra State.
‘It is also part of my plan to see that these great talents who have made our nation proud but are not remembered anymore by our leaders are not forgotten’ he said, adding that if elected into office he will work seriously to reinvigorate the state sports illustrious history, encourage and use sports to uplift our talented youths.
