Iyom Lilian Uche Ekwunife, one of the gubernatorial aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the Anambra election who was actually the runner up in the party gubernatorial primaries has come up with the reasons why she went to court on the alleged double registration of Dr Willie Obiano, the man who flew APGA’s flag in the November 16 guber election.
She said it was due to his love for the party and to save the party from losing out completely in the whole process.
She has also debunked any information claiming that he has withdrawn the suit. She said there was no truth whatsoever in it. That he went to court as a patriotic party faithful and in defense of democracy. She said that any rumour about his withdrawing the suit must be the mischievous idle thought of the authors.
Ekwunife who currently represents Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia constituency in the lower chamber of the National Assembly, insisted that her action was not done in bad faith at all but to ensure the survival of the party in the likely event of the suits filed by some members of opposing parties against Obiano.
Ekwunife who is the leader of the Anambra Caucus in the House she joined in the suit now because if Obiano is declared as the winner of the election after the supplementary poll the matter would become a post-election issue which would then be between Obiano and other political parties.
The lawmaker who said it would be hypocritical of anyone to pretend there were no suits filed against Obiano said the matter was not one to be approached with sentiments.
She pointed out that it was in the spirit of good sportsmanship she collapsed her structure into the Obiano campaign structure during the electioneering period said her action was purely a precautionary oneaimed at giving the party a second option should anything untoward happen in court. She said her action was a great sacrifice by her to preserve the party and not just a personal ambition, even as she expressed respect for the governor and the party leadership.
She further stated that many legal luminaries had acceded to her legal position which they held to be the correct position in law while she also noted that more than seven suits were in court on the issue by other political parties.
