The Ogun State House of Assembly has expressed it worries over the declining allocation accruing to the state from the Federation Account in the recent time and has therefore challenged local government in the state to wake brace up to the challenge by putting strategies in place on how to improve on their revenue generation for improved service to the people.
Giving the charge while addressing some council chairmen on their budget performance, the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Olukunle Oluomo, urged them to work on improving their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), if they hope to meet the needs of the people.
The committee, which commenced its oversight function, would visit all the 20 local governments in the state to assess their budget performances so far.
The committee chairman who was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Olowo-Oloja, noted that the measure is necessary considering the present precarious situation facing the state.
He explained that improvement in the IGR of the councils would make it possible for them to put in place infrastructure that would complement the Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led government efforts at the grassroots.
The lawmakers observed that the performance of the local councils would tremendously have positive impacts on the socio-economic development advancement of the state, hence the need for them to do better.
In response, the Chairman of Obafemi/Owode local council, Alhaji Nurudeen Diyaolu disclosed that his council had between January and August recorded 60 percent of its budgeted IGR.
Some of the council chairmen, however, claimed that they embarked on road construction, schools renovation, provision of furniture to public schools in their councils.
