Officials of Reckitt Benkiser Nigeria Limited, manufacturers of assorted kinds of toiletries in conjunction with the National Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) Aba Zone and the Aba Area Command of the Nigerian Police have arrested 7 suspects in Eziukwu Market, Aba for allegedly selling adulterated products.
The suspects were allegedly involved in the sale and distribution of adulterated Dettol Antiseptic soap in the market.
247ureports.com gathered that the company had received so many complaints from their numerous customers in the commercial city about the distribution of the fake dettol product in the Eziukwu market.
A staff of the company who took part in the raid said “We have information that traders in Eziukwu were selling fake dettol to members of the public, we sent out some spies in the market where they pretended as a customer that needed the fake product.
“Luckily for us, one of our spies met one Chinenye Madu who told him he has the product. He prepared receipts after our spy had placed the quantity he wants to buy. However, our spy alerted the policemen that went for the operation leading to the arrest of the young man.
He disclosed that during the raid, six other persons were arrested and were handed over to the police.
Speaking to journalists, Regional and Area Sales Managers, Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria limited, Charles Onodu and Victor Adeyemo, said that the company decided to embark on the raid after they were informed that some people have been distributing the adulterated dettol soap in the market.
They said it has become important for them to raid markets in Aba and the state of the adulterated products of the company owing to the negative health implication(s) consumers may when they are exposed to such products.
They hinted that the company has advanced plans to sensitize the general public about its products to check the activities of fakers.
Chief Regulatory Officer of NAFDAC for Aba Zone, Mr. Udoekpo Ekpo said the exercise would be a continued effort of the agency to stop the activities of fakers of manufacturers’ products.
“We will not relent in our commitment to sanitize Aba market of fake products,” he said.
