The Deputy Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee has alleged that the “Powers that be” a veiled reference to the presidency and the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike is using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a tool against politicians supporting Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
He particularly cited the case of the embattled leader of the House, Hon. Chidi Lloyd, who is facing attempted murder charges in the aftermath of the brawl in the House, where he repeatedly hit the head of a fellow lawmaker with a mace.
Kwanee said that pressures were being mounted from above in the case involving the leader, but noted that the granting of bail to Hon. Lloyd, judiciary demonstrates that the judiciary is committed to the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
The Deputy Speaker also appealed to the judiciary to resist any attempt by any interest to influence them in any case that borders on the rule of law and the survival of democracy.
Kwanee urged the judiciary to apply the spirit of the law and judicial activism in order to protect our nascent democracy, and urged politicians to play the game according to the rules.
He also urged them to play their own part in order not to derail the republic, just as he appealed to well meaning and non partisan Nigerians to wade into the Rivers crisis and reconcile all parties in the interest of the nation.
