Onitsha Human Heads Saga: Court Sets Hearing Date

An Onitsha High court has reserved ruling in a motion filed by Dr M.N.
Umenweke, counsel to Chief Bonaventure Mokwe who is the principal accused
person in the case of an unconfirmed number of human heads allegedly found
in an Onitsha-based hotel, last week, for the release of the accused on
bail.
Mokwe who is the proprietor of Upper Class Hotel, Onitsha, demolished last
Thursday on the orders of the Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi for
allegedly harboring unwholesome acts including human heads and firearms,
was charged to court yesterday. He was detained at the Special
Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Awkuzu, where he was allegedly denied access to
his family and lawyers.

Dr Umenweke leading other lawyers on behalf of Mokwe, Was praying the
court to declare that his arrest and detention by the police and the
Anambra State is illegal and unconstitutional, they were also urging the
court to declare that his continued detention without allowing him access
to his counsel and relations is unlawful and without justifiable reason.

They further sought for a perpetual injunction restraining the
respondents and their agents from further detention, harassment and
attempt on his person or family, and a declaration of court to stop
further demolition of the applicant’s property at Ose Okwodu and any other
property belonging to th applicant and his family, such demolition being
unlawful and unconstitutional.
