THE Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, yesterday
confirmed the arrest of a 64 year old man, Mr. Peter Edigbo who
allegedly raped a 6 year old girl, Nkwegu Chinwe, at Agbaenyim in Izzi
Local government area of the state.
Briefing newsmen at the Command Headquarters in Abakaliki, the Corps
Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Corp, ASC
Emmanuel Nwali stated that the suspect would have been lynched if not
for the timely intervention of the officers and men of Command in Izzi
LGA.
Nwali who noted that after full investigation, the suspect would be
transferred to the appropriate Agency responsible for handling cases
surrounding rape added that the suspect had been notorious for such
act as the village Head and other members of the community also
confirmed the incident to the Command.
According to the Command’s spokesman, the victim who felt a hard push
in between her legs raised an alarm which attracted members of the
community.
He said: “Yesterday at about 6pm we received a signal from one of our
divisions in Izzi that an old man defiled a girl of six years old.
“When we got the report we told them to transfer the matter to our
command headquarters in Abakaliki so that we will handle it
appropriately; so far we are still investigating the case and after
that we are going to hand over the case to the appropriate quarters
because that is not one of our core mandates as NSCDC.
“The suspect, Mr. Peter Edigbo, 64, hails from Agbaenyim in Izzi LGA
of the state; the village head and villagers among others confirmed
the incident and that the man has been in such act for quite some time
despite warnings from community members. And if not for the timely
intervention of our men the man who have been lynched”
Narrating her ordeal, the victim said: “The only thing I noticed when
I was sleeping at midnight period was a hard thing inside my body.
This is second time such thing is happening to me by the same man.
“I had to scream and it was my screaming that attracted people”
The women who examined the victim also
confirm the incident.
