Another brawl at the House of Representative may have been averted by the Speaker of the House. This was he acted to defer the consideration of the constitution amendment report.ย The Speaker based his decisionย on the fact that notย all members of the House had the opportunity to peruse through the amended constitution.
At the lower chambers, the legislators had already commenced consideration of the constitution before Hon. Razaq Bello-Osagie (ACN, Edo), raised an observation that some membersย had not gotten copies of the report – adding that it would make it difficult for them to make any meaningful contribution.
To this, the Speaker ruled that debates on the amended constitution would not hold.ย He however addedย that he wouldย allow members to make comments, reactions and observations on any clause that they deemed necessary.
But as Honorable Bitrus Kaze (PDP, Plateau) raised an observation that members ought to be allocated time to debate and make contribution, Tambuwal ruled that the time for debate had passed.
In his words, “At the commencement of this process, Honorable Razaq drew our attention to the fact that some of us did not get copies of the report, and most of those that got, got it this morning. The consideration of the report is hereby deferred till tomorrow.โ
