US television network, CBS, is reporting that former president Nelson Mandela recently underwent a surgical procedure to unlock his dialysis tube and that his life support machine shows he’s in distress.

The network is reporting that Mandela wasn’t responding well to his medications this past week.

Mandela has been hospitalised for a recurring lung infection for over a month and a half now at Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital, the longest he’s ever been in hospital.

It is not yet clear how many more procedures Mandela will have to undergo in order to recuperate. The presidency is yet to release a statement confirming Mandela’s operation.

Its last update was that the former president is still in a critical condition but shows sustained improvement.

Mandela’s daughter Zinzi told Eyewitness News on Mandela Day that her father was getting better and they were expecting him to be discharged soon.

Zinzi spoke a few days after former president Thabo Mbeki said Mandela’s doctors had assured him that Madiba would be discharged soon to recuperate at home.

Madiba’s birthday on 18 July was commemorated across the globe, from reunions of his friends in the US to the South African flag cast in light over the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Residents in New York used Mandela Day as a platform to make donations to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg.

The city led events in the US commemorating the day, which began at the UN and ended at Gotham Hall with a fundraiser held by the Legacy of Hope Foundation.

The honourary committee board of the foundation included Whoopi Goldberg, Charlize Theron and Natali Portman.

Robert De Niro attended an event held at the South African consulate to express his gratitude to Madiba.
