The House of Representatives on Tuesday finally resolved to vote today (Wednesday) on the clause-by-clause of the 1999 Constitution Review with 360 iPods that were supplied and installed by the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat) and this is coming after three earlier postponements.
The Representatives had on Tuesday last week deferred the consideration of the report on the bill for an act to further alter the provision of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic’ on the ground that some members were yet to receive the copies of the report.
In order to save the House from embarassment, NigComSat was invited to come to the rescue after the break down of the electronic voting system in the chamber.
The lawmakers spent more than four hours in closed doors yesterday, trying to perfect the use of the new device before going into voting.
Addressing the members on the floor of the House, Ahmed Rufai, director general of NigComSat, who hinted that the tablets were brought in on Monday, said that the application has been tested for members to vote, using their iPods.
He advised them to fully charge the tablets ahead of today’s voting to avoid any form of embarrassment should the voting process take longer than expected.
Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, speaker of the House, pleaded with the press to seek the understanding of Nigerians to allow the system to be perfected for voting, adding that “what’s worth doing is worth doing well.”
Meanwhile, the Enugu State caucus of the House has reiterated its support for the creation of Adada State out of the present Enugu State with capital at Nsukka.
Addressing the press, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, hinted that the request to create the state has received the endorsement of all the senators, members of the House of Representatives and local government council members from the area.
“In addition to the above, the Enugu State House of Assembly, as well as the chairmen and councilors of all the local government councils in Enugu State, and in particular, those from the area in question, have endorsed the creation of Adada State,” he said.
