The former leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, has warned civil society groups coordinated for a planned protest in Port Harcourt Tuesday by Barr. Nsirimovu Anyakwee – not to go ahead with the protest, because it is capable of worsening the crisis in the state.
Asari said there was need for those in support or against Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to respect the order placed against protest by the state police command to reduce tension in the state.
He, however, threatened that reaction against the protest could make the atmosphere in Rivers to be like what is going on in Egypt, where the supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood are up against the supporters of the recent military take over, as well as soldiers preventing the Brotherhood members from continuing their sit ins.
It will be recalled that Nsirimovu Anyakwee, who is the executive director of Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, IHRHL, had in a press conference in Port Harcourt said that that renowned activists like Olisa Agbakoba, Femi Falana, Joe Odumakin, among others will be part of the protest.
“Let them come (the invited guests) and see what happens. They will tell us what is happening in Rivers state that will warrant them leaving their place to come here and stage a protest”, Asari said in a telephone interview on Monday.
He said that he would not hesitate to stage a counter-protest against the visitors, adding that the organizers of the exercise were “jobless people who have been looking for where to collect free money for their living”.
“Are we fighting war here? What will warrant anybody coming to Rivers state to cause unnecessary tension when in actual sense there is no need for that?”
