The Campaign for Democracy (CD), South-East region has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to order the unconditional release of over 500 members of Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM).
This was contained in a two-pager statement issued by CD to newsmen on Tuesday in Onitsha, Anambra.
The statement was signed by Dede Uzor A. Uzor, Chairman of CD, South-East Region.
“It is very unacceptable and wicked for police in Enugu to arrest defenseless activists, who are not armed with any weapon.
“The movement was just agitating for their freedom as enshrined in Chapter 4; Sections 33, 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38 of the amended 1999 Constitution.
“Which provides the freedom of association and peaceful assembly,’’ it said.
The statement condemned the kangaroo manner at which the BZM activists were arrested; consequently arraigned and remanded in Prison custody.
“This is very sad and acceptable to the entire Igbo-nation going by the on-going killings by the Boko Haram religious sect in the Northern part of the country.
“Boko Haram so far had killed over 3,000 defenseless Nigerians.
“Of which 1,573 are Igbos, who were killed in their business areas, churches and residential quarters.
“But till now, the Federal Government is not doing enough to checkmate their criminal activities against the Nigerian nation.
“Instead, the government t machineries are bouncing on peaceful, harmless, and defenseless Igbos and throwing them into jail without committing any criminal offence,’’ it said.
The statement said that CD wanted the Federal and 36 state governments to constitute the much desired “National Sovereign Conference (NSC)’’.
“It is only the NSC conference that would grant the various nations that make up the country the opportunity to air their views and decide how they want the country to be governed peaceful to avoid further shade of blood,’’ it said.
