Tragedy Monday struck in Onitsha at about 5.30 pm at the Nkpor Flyover bridge when a trailer with numbe plate XA 879 AMO Imo State, lost control killing about 18 people and injuring 12 others.
The trailer was heading from Tazan junction, Nkpor, to Onitsha when it lost control and hit 8 vehicles, including a students bus and truck belonging to Consolidated Construction Company, CCC, handling the road project.
Some officials of Federal Road Safety Corps where seen controlling traffic for easy passage .
According to an eye witness, the accident would have been averted if the CCC construction company handling the road had not blocked one lane of the flyover road where no job was going on.
An eye witness said: “We have been appealing to them to open the other part of the flyover they closed since last year but the refused now you have seen how their continued closure of that part of the flyover has led to loss of innocent lives.
“The trailer driver lost control of his vehicle tried to avert the accident but the only lane that is functional was filled with vehicles and he rammed into them.
Both the Police, Army and men of Federal Road Safety Corps were seen directing affairs and making effort to remove the vehicles from the road to ease the already traffic jam caused by the accident.

Closure of one lane or not, the major problems are madness of drivers and poor maintainance of vehicles, worsened by frequent wear and tear due to terrible roads! The law enforcement agents are also not helping matters as same vehicle and driver will hit the road again is a matter of weeks! Terrible!
ugo;am sure ur not a driver.if u were,u wil understand what “loss of steering control” is all about.
I was there wen al d crashes took place.i tink d trailer driver cud av avoided d did that has been done coz d closed lane was not closed in d real sense of it.it was only closed wit a safety and caution tape.if d senseless trailer driver was sensible enough depending on his experience in driving,he wud av followed d closed part of d road.
Infact,d entire axis where d incidence took place is a death trap particularly pedestrian crosssin d road from one end to d oda coz it is a popular bus stop.before goin to work,i trek from street to d bus stop and board availabl commuter bus to my place of work.I hav alredy close wrk for d day.immediately i alighted from d bus ,i was about crossin d road before d incident happened.truly,it was pathetic wit gory sight.
