The Abia State command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), says it has established two road side clinics at kilometer 78, Enugu/Port Harcourt Expressway and the Abia Tower in Umuahia.

Abia state Commander of the agency, Mr. John Meheux who stated this at Osisioma Motor Park in Aba during the flag off of the final phase of the ‘Ember Months’ campaign sponsored by Nigeria Breweries Plc, Aba, said the aim of the campaign was to reduce accidents during the festive season.

Meheux said the essence of establishing the clinics was to assist road accident victims. “Within 20 minutes after an accident, men of the commission would be at hand to attend to the victims at the designated clinics,” he stated.

He disclosed that the FRSC has deployed over 400 regular marshals and a number of special marshals to man roads in the state to ensure lane discipline during the Christmas festivities.

“During the period of the campaign, we interacted with the leaders of transport union in the state on the dangers inherent in their members driving when drunk.

“We chose to meet with the leaders of the drivers’ union at their various motor parks because and they are the ones on ground who should know when a driver was drunk and should replace him with another for a journey.”

He urged motorists to use the toll free line of 122 to contact his men in the case of any emergency during this period.

Speaking on the occasion, the Public Affairs Manager- East, Nigeria Breweries Plc, Mrs Emete Tonukari said her company sponsored the campaign as part of her social responsibilities.

She added that although her company was involved in the production of alcoholic beverages, it still deemed it necessary to partner with FRSC to mount campaign against drunk driving

“Things seem different when you are drunk, so don’t drink any form of alcohol when driving,”Emete said.
