Update: Gun Fight Breaks in Southern Taraba, 4 Dead, Houses Burnt

Latest information states that 4 people have been killed – as a result of violence which erupted after a Muslim was killed at an illegal checkpoint.

Information available to 247ureports.com indicates that the southern regoin of Taraba State near the border of Taraba and Plateau State to be under crisis. According to the reports received,  the Ibi Local Government area [LGA] of Taraba state has been on fire. The incident was reported to start at about 10am today [Sunday November 18, 2012]. The incident is reported to be taking placed between armed civilians.

Sources  on the ground at the LGA who have begun to scamper for safety stated that “houses are being burnt, civilians shooting each other, casualties increasing and no presence of security forces yet as of now“.

The cause of latest battle is unsure but a security source in Taraba stated that the border region comprises largely of – Jukun and Hausa/Fulani people. The source pointed to the religious clash as the probably cause for the latest violence outbreak.

In talking to the LGA Chairman of Ibi, Ishiaku Adamu, he confirmed that a violent outbreak took hold early today’s morning – “but the security agents are here and are controlling the matter“. The Chairman refused to comment further – as he stated that he was on patrol with security agents.

Already, the Nigerian security officials have called up the military divisions in Kaduna in alertness. As of 10am, [Chindic Barracks in Zaria] the constabuls and lance coporals [and other Army personnel] were called out to “come and sign out for their riffles” – and to stay on standby. Some of the top security officers tell our correspondent that security intelligence revealled that men of the dreaded Islamic terrorist group were headed to Zaria. Their intelligence reports indicated that the first batch had already arrived Zaria yesterday.
