Following Monday’s suspension of the Seven-Day strike action, former Abia state governor Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has commended the leadership of the NLC and TUC for taking a bold step.
Kalu who reiterated the interest of the masses as the centrepiece of any action, urged Nigerians to think first about the unity of the nation above individual inclinations praying both Labour and government to maintain the window of communications in the coming days.
He said,”i commend the leadership of the NLC and TUC for calling of the strike in the interest of the people. They made a point, which has been noted by government. The decision to first suspend mass protests, and later call of the strike shows a huge sense of maturity on the part of Labour.”
The former governor while saluting all those who made efforts to restore normalcy also frowned at attempts by unscrupulous elements to hijack the protests.
“As law abiding citizens, the right to protest is in tandem with democratic ideals. However, it is difficult to explain the wanton destruction of lives, property and attack on journalists. Those who descended on innocent journalists definitely were not on the side of the masses and had no business coming out in the first place”,he added.
Kalu also gave kudos to President Goodluck Jonathan for reducing the pump price of petrol to 97 naira per litre from the initial 140 naira per litre.
“The President should be commended for his flexibility.Politics is about give and take. You win some, you lose some.Dialogue is key,Labour and government should continue to talk.Nigerians look up to them,” Kalu summed up.
