Only one of the seven bodies of the job applicants who died in last weekend’s Immigration service recruitment fiasco in Abuja, has been released.
The family of Oyisa Yusuf, a 35-year-old mother of one, has taken her body away.
National Hospital spokesman Tayo Haastrup, a doctor, said six other bodies are yet unclaimed.
He said: “They were about 70 injured initially brought here but reduced to 30 as they were being treated and discharged. And now we have six in the ward, among them are two pregnant women.
“They are now in good condition and have been yearning to go home. It is most likely we will discharge them tomorrow (today).
“What will still be keeping the others is just the POP around their legs and little pains. Nobody died in our custody, the bodies were brought to the National Hospital from the stadium.
“We are still waiting for relations to come and identify bodies and this is followed by proper procedures, like the police report. As soon as all these are done, bodies will be released to the families.”
Haastrup chastised the organisers of the tragic recruitment, saying: “For a programme of this magnitude, there should be a medical team involved so as to forestall this kind of situation.”
Recalling what happened, Folashade Olanrewaju, a six- month- old expectant woman, said: “I got there before 7am. At the main gate, I saw a crowd, as I was trying to enter the stadium. All I knew after that was finding myself in the hospital. A policeman told me I should thank God that I’m alive. They asked me of my husband’s phone member and they called to inform him.”
An Osun State indigene, the woman, added: “I am okay now and I want to be discharged. I only feel little pains. I am still interested in the NIS job since I am still alive. I have a National Diploma certificate in Business Administration from the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State.”
