Twenty-two persons have been convicted for drug related offences between January 2017 and February 2018, in Anambra state, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said.

The state Commander of the Agency, Mr. Sule Momodu, made the disclosure in Awka, during a radio participatory programme, “NDLEA and You”.

He revealed that the suspects were convicted for being in possession of hard drugs such a cocaine, heroin and cannabis sativa in different quantities ranging from 0.7g to 18kg and received sentences ranging from 12 months to 7years.

Momodu further explained that 19 and 3 convictions were secured in 2017 and February 2018, respectively, assuring that the agency would not relent in its efforts to ensure that the state was totally rid of drug trafficking and abuse.

While alerting the public of a new threat of the abuse of methaplythamine that is beginning to rear its ugly head in the State, the NDLEA boss called on the church and community leaders, to join in the fight against drug abuse.

He commended the State government for its support to the Agency in the fight especially for retaining it as a member of the State security council, describing such gesture as key to the successes being recorded in the anti-drug fight in the society.
