Ahead of the March 28, 2015 presidential election, the signs that the people of the South East geo-political zone will vote for President Goodluck Jonathan were clearly demonstrated in the commercial city of Onitsha just as business men and traders who are known to be the major inhabitants of the zone shunned a scheduled interactive section with the presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress, APC, General Mohamed Buhari.
According to a press statement credited to APC, the Interactive section holding at the popular Sharon Hall in Onitsha was expected to address the invitees on Buhari’s policy on business, Commerce and Industry and consequently attract captains of industries, Importers and traders from Onitsha, Aba, Nnewi and other parts of the zone.
But our correspondent who visited Sharon Hall reports that no presence of businessmen and traders from the markets in the city such as Main market, Bridge Head and notable Industrialists in and outside the city were also absent.
According to our correspondent, officials of APC in Anambra and some Journalists were at the venue waiting for the visitor at4pm while the event was scheduled to take off by 12 noon.
Contacted the Director General of Onitsha Chambers of Commerce Industries Mines and Agriculture ONICCIMA, Mr. Dominic Ajibo, on why its members didn’t attend, told our correspondent that the event was a public function which everybody is free to attend adding that those who feel that they will benefit from it will attend but if anybody decides not to attend you cannot force the person.
Speaking in the same a top official of Anambra Amalgamated Traders Association AMATAs, who didn’t want his name printed out said that traders don’t buy into functions on Mondays. Today is Monday and it is difficult for most of us to abandon our shops to attend functions.
At Onitsha main market an importer Mr. Kenneth Abasilum told our correspondent that, the function belong to APC while the traders are predominantly APGA, “You don’t expect APGA followers to attend APC function. Moreover, the first lady was here today so people’s attention must have diverted to the visit of the first lady”, he added.
