Journalists Battle INEC PRO Over Allegation of Terrorism Against Colleague In Anambra

By Okey Maduforo Awka

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Anambra’ State has barred journalists from covering its activities, particularly, the ongoing issuance of certificates of return to winners of the State House of Assembly election held on 18th of March 2023 in the state.

The commission through its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Kingsley Agu took the decision to prevent journalists who were at the commission’s headquarters in Awka the state capital for the issuance of the certificates of return to lawmakers elect.

Dr. Agu has been in the eye of the storm in the past two weeks over his unruly and unprofessional conduct to some of the newsmen, especially, members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) of the state council.

As a consequence, members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council, have kicked against what they called the unwholesome and repulsive attitude of the INEC’s Public Relations Officer( PRO), Kingsley Agu.

They have therefore petitioned the Anambra Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Queen Elizabeth Agwu and the Federal Commissioner Information and Voter Education INEC, Abuja, Festus Okoye, to call Agu to order.

According to the petition signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Correspondents’Chapel, Chief Chuks Ilozue and Mrs Tochukwu Ifejika, respectively, which was copied to the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo and Anambra State Chairman of the Union, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, the journalists
frowned at the frequent attacks, harrassment , intimidation and insults on journalists in the state by the PRO, Kingsley Agu.

The petitioners alleged that on one occasion, Agu labelled one of their members a suicide bomber, a situation that made security operatives stationed at the INEC Anambra headquarters to treat such member shabbily.

The petition read in part, “We the members of the aforementioned union have resolved to officially communicate you in your capacity as the head of Voter Education and Publicity of the growing incidences capable of endangering the existing working relationship between our members and INEC as orchestrated by the conducts of the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of INEC Anambra state, Dr Kingsley Agu.”

“We write to intimate you about the unwholesome and repulsive attitude of your Public Relations Officer, Dr Kingsley Agu to journalists in Anambra State in general, and especially members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ), Anambra State council.”

“To begin with, in the just concluded 2023 general elections, Dr AGU unleashed the security operatives stationed at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Awka against Journalists with special mention of Mr Cajetain Mmuta, the Bureau Chief of ThisNigeria newspaper during which Agu openly told the security operatives that they should be watchful of Journalists entering the commission as they equally could bring in Improvised Explosive Devises (IED) into INEC.

“Considering the weighty nature of the unguided outburst by Agu, Mmuta wrote official compliant to you, but regrettably nothing has been heard from you over such immodest attack on not only the image of media professional, but on the corporate identity of Journalists.

“However, our concern swell due to several other reports by members during our March 2023 monthly meeting that Agu had at different times reported our members mala fide to their offices , an act that has threatened and is still threatening the employments of our colleagues.

“The above scenario in the case of Mmuta when added to many other compliants from respected colleagues on how Dr Agu had talked down on them and insulted them using unprintable words including threatening to issue queries to Journalists and transferring them out of Awka is indeed very worrisome trend capable of jeopardizing the presumed good working relationship with the commission before now.”

“We therefore resolved to do this petition believing that you call Dr Agu to order to avert an avoidable rift that might erupt between our members and your esteem organisation.”

They said, “As you are fully aware,, the public relations department of any organisation is the mouth piece as well as the mirror of any organisation with the public.”

“As professionals in the media industry, we do not want to harbour ill feelings that Agu was doing the bidding of INEC as a body due to the presumed ignominy to Mmuta’s earlier petition to your office dated March 16, 2023 and a copy attached herein.

“We therefore crave your indulgence to call the PRO to order, if he must continue to interface between the Commission and the media in Anambra as not acting in this direction might obviously snowball to something untoward in the near future. Thanks and God bless you,” they added.

By Okey Maduforo Awka

Twenty four hours after Gov Charles Soludo of Anambra handed down a three months ultimatum to the newly inaugurated the Internally Generated Revenue Committee to perform or get sacked , there is panic among alleged government officials who have been fingered to diverting the revenue of the state.

Already some of the suspected perpetrators are making efforts to bribe both the Committee and the Transporters Forum but have met a brick wall while names are being compiled for prosecution.

To this end the committee in conjunction with the Anambra Joint Transporters Forum has concluded arrangements to publish and expose names of top government officials who have been working with touts to steal state revenue.

Recall that Soludo had lamented the dwindling revenue of the state adding that some persons and group of persons have been neck deep in cornering revenue meant for the state.

According to the Executive Director for Anambra North Senatorial District of the IGR committee Dr Christian Madubuko shortly after a meeting with the Transporters,

“We are aware that some top government functionaries are neck deep in defrauding the state of it’s Internally Generated Revenue and they do that with the touts in the state who pay into their private bank accounts and we know them ”

“The directive of the governor is clear and we can only beat the three months deadline by fishing out and exposing those government functionaries no matter their positions in government and we are using the stakeholders in all the sectors to do that”

Chairman of Anambra Joint Transporters Forum Mr Elvis Okoli this has been happening in the past and nothing is being done about it but with what the governor has said we are now emboldened to tackle revenue thieves headlong ”

“We are setting up Revenue Courts to try those touts as well as those in government who connive with them and bring them to book and with the assistance of our members we are going to succeed ”

“We already have lists of such people and some of them have been making efforts to reach us but we are not going to listen to them because it is a total war against revenue thieves ” he said.

President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has showered praise on Nigerians, saying his election as the country’s next president is the greatest gift he could receive as he celebrates his 71st birthday.

This was contained in a message to Nigerians personally signed by him and issued on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.

The president-elect assured that he is committed to rebuilding the country and renewing the “hope of the Nigerian people”.

He said the greatest birthday gift he has ever received is the chance to lead the country.

“I have already been given the greatest gift. A chance to lead and fulfil destiny. An opportunity to champion your aspirations and to bring about the Nigeria of your dreams,” Tinubu stated.

US recovers N24.4b ( $53m) from illegal awarded contracts to ex- Nigerian petroleum minister

The United States Department of Justice has announced the final resolution of two civil cases in forfeiture of the luxury assets that were laundered in and through Nigeria in a case linking former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and her colleagues.

Diezani’s associates who were named in the forfeiture case are Kola Aluko, a Nigerian businessman, and Jide Omokore, chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited.

The DOJ said the forfeited assets were the “proceeds of foreign corruption offences”.

In a statement released on its website on Monday, the US department of justice said that “roughly $53.1 million in cash, plus a promissory note with a principal value of $16 million” have been recovered as part of “proceeds of illicitly awarded contracts” involving the trio — Diezeani, Aluko, and Omokore.

“According to court documents, from 2011 to 2015, Nigerian businessmen Kolawole Akanni Aluko and Olajide Omokore conspired with others to pay bribes to Nigeria’s former minister for petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, who oversaw Nigeria’s state-owned oil company,” the statement reads.

Interim Govt alarm: DSS spreading fake News to arrest Atiku, Obi before May 29 – Timi Frank

0

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Thursday, raised the alarm over a plan by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, before the May 29 handover date.

According to him, the DSS has perfected the plot using the Interim spurious agitation for National Government (ING) as a decoy.

The DSS had on Wednesday in Abuja accused those it referred to as “entrenched interests” of plotting to subvert democracy by forcing the emplacement of an ING in the country.

But Frank, the Ambassador United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) (East Africa and Middle East), in a statement in Abuja, said the secret police know more than they chose to tell Nigerians and urged them to be more forthcoming.

According to him, the security alarm by the DSS was meant as an alibi to crackdown on peaceful protesters demonstrating against the rigged 2023 presidential election and to massively arrest opposition politicians in the country.

He said, “The DSS’ purported intelligence is fake. It is a plot to crackdown on protesters and arrest opposition political leaders before May 29. We have credible information that the DSS issued the statement in preparation for its planned disruption of ongoing protest by Nigerians who are demonstrating peacefully to demand for justice and the restoration of their stolen mandate.”

Frank said that the DSS ought to have used the same intelligence to stop abuse and killing of Nigerians by terrorists groups over the years.

He said, “Where was their intelligence when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu were compromised to rig the 2023 general election?

“Nigerians have been under siege by bandits, kidnappers and terrorists for a long time now, but the DSS never gave intelligence to foil kidnapping, heinous attacks, maiming and killings of innocent Nigerians.

“The only time you see the DSS coming up to talk about intelligence is whenever Nigerians are preparing to either protest against obnoxious government policies, rules, human rights abuses or carrying out lawful political activities.

“The DSS must stop this method of intimidating Nigerians, especially politicians, whenever they want to exercise their constitutional rights.

“In fact, we dare the DSS or any other security outfit in the country to arrest Atiku and Obi before May 29 and see the wrath of Nigerians.”

Frank however called on protesters not to be intimidated by “this DSS’ fake intelligence of a phantom ING plot.”

He enjoined the UK, US and EU to immediately call on the Nigerian Government to allow Nigerians to exercise their democratic rights which is to ensure that the stolen mandate of the Nigerian people is restored through peaceful protests and the judicial process.

Frank said, “We are aware that the DSS is planning to sponsor counter protests across the country to clash with the peaceful protesters and use that as an excuse to clampdown on them.

“We dare the DSS to name those involved in the phantom plot if they genuinely have the ‘intelligence’ about a m plot to instigate an ING so the world will know those who plan to stop the inauguration of the President.

“But we know they are not being sincere. This is often their style whenever they want to engage in propaganda and do a hatchet job.

“On the contrary, let them name the purported politicians involved in the plot. Their real intent is to clampdown on protesters and arrest Atiku and Obi before May 29. Nothing more.

“We use this opportunity to call on the international community to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the DSS to order and stop them from meddling in the democratic process.

“The DSS is the one that is about to scuttle democracy in the country at this moment by plotting to arrest Atiku and Obi and other top opposition politicians.”

He also asked that the DSS should not be used to truncate democracy or as purveyors of fake news.

He insisted that the DSS had of recent attempted albeit unsuccessfully to arrest and prosecute the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele for allegedly financing terrorism in the country.

“They later pulled back following the outcry that trailed the move. This is another of such hoaxes and it is one too many.”

“Unmasking The Real Bola Ahmed Tinubu” – [Video Documentary]

0

Nigeria may be in for a new experience as the outgoing administration of Muhammadu Buhari prepares to hand over to Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was declared as the President-Elect by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC], Prof Mahmood Yakubu. Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to take up the mantle of President on May 29, 2023 following his swearing in and inauguration as the President of Nigeria.

A younger Tinubu

However, the process that brought the President-Elect have come under intense scrutiny. Election Observers – both local and international – point to the presidential election that “elected’ the President-Elect as heavily marred with illegalities and violence. The process was tagged as not free, not transparent and not credible. The opposition parties who contested for the presidential seat have already headed for the election tribunal to dispute the outcome of the election.

Bola Tinubu, in my opinion, does not have the mental and physical capacity to govern today”says Pat Utomi.

In the meantime, the background of the President-Elect has been called to question. Allegations are abound of his involvement in drug deals and financial crimes of which a court in the United States of America [USA] convicted Bola Ahmed Tinubu for drug related offenses. The educational background of the President-Elect has been called to question. Particularly his claim to have attended the University of Chicago. Investigators who conducted a comprehensive search discovered major discrepancies over Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s claim to have attended University of Chicago. Additionally, the stated age of the President-Elect has also been questioned owing to inconsistencies indicating that the President-Elect may have falsified his age.

The October 16th 1998 Guardian newspaper described Bola Tinubu as a year 52 years old. He however just celebrated 71 years. I am tempted to ask again, who exactly is Tinubu.
Chicago University record shows a female “Tinubu Bola A” was a student. Now we have a male Bola Ahmed Tinubu claiming to be same person.

According to Jackson Ude, a famous online publisher, “Bola Tinubu’s real name is: Yekini Amoda Ogunlere, from Iragbiji, Osun state. That is what is contained in his Primary and Secondary school certificates. That’s why he has refused to tender them before INEC. I dare him to tender them at the Tribunal and let’s see if he is not kicked out, arrested and jailed!”

A younger Tinubu in Afro

Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected Governor of Lagos State in 1999 and served two terms in Office till 2007. His stint as the Governor was remarkable and highly controversial. Critics claim the two terms as highly corrupt years for Lagos State. Allegations have it that he used Lagos as his private company.

A documentary produced by a television network by name AIT back in March 2015 raised some of the critical issues surrounding the background of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The documentary led to Tinubu filling a N150billion suit against the television. AIT responded swiftly describing Tinubu’s claims and demands as laughable and demanded an apology from Tinubu. Despite his earlier threats, AIT continued to air the documentary!

Donald Trump indictment: Ex-US president to be charged over hush money [BBC]

Former US President Donald Trump will be charged over hush money payments made to a porn star just before the 2016 presidential election.

The details of the charges he will face have not yet been released.

A grand jury voted to indict him on criminal charges, after investigating a $130,000 pay-out to Stormy Daniels in an attempt to buy her silence over an alleged affair. He denies wrongdoing.

Mr Trump, 76, is the first serving or former US president to face charges.

His lawyer, Susan Necheles, confirmed the indictment in a statement on Thursday evening.

“He did not commit any crime,” she said. “We will vigorously fight this political prosecution in court.”

The ex-president lives in Florida and is expected to travel to New York City for his formal arrest and first hearing in court.

According to his defence team, Mr Trump will surrender next week. The United States Secret Service – which is tasked with protecting serving and former US presidents – will be in charge of security for the court appearance.

Mr Trump faces the prospect of having his fingerprints recorded and his mugshot taken, like all defendants in criminal cases.

In a statement, Mr Trump lashed out at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who has been pursuing the case. He called the prosecutor a “disgrace”, and accused him of “doing Joe Biden’s dirty work”.

“The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to ‘Get Trump,’ but now they’ve done the unthinkable – indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference,” he said.

Mr Trump has repeatedly slammed the investigation in his hometown of New York as a political “witch hunt” led by his opponents. Mr Bragg is a registered Democrat.

The inquiry stems from an allegation that Mr Trump directed his then-lawyer Michael Cohen to pay Stormy Daniels, a former porn actress and stripper, less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election to prevent her speaking out about an alleged affair with Mr Trump.

Ms Daniels has said she had a sexual encounter with Mr Trump at a Lake Tahoe hotel in 2006 – the year after he married his current wife, Melania.

Cohen has said in court that he made the $130,000 settlement “in co-ordination with and at the direction of” the former president. Cohen was jailed from 2018-20 on multiple charges.

Mr Trump is currently the front-runner among all declared and potential contenders for the Republican White House nomination.

But there is nothing in US law that prevents a candidate who is found guilty of a crime from campaigning for, and serving as, president – even from prison.

Mr Trump is also being investigated in several other cases.

The other investigations include probes into his role in the US Capitol riot of January 2021, his efforts to overturn his loss in the state of Georgia in the 2020 election, and his handling of classified documents after leaving office.

Mr Trump – who served as president from 2017-21 – was twice impeached by the House of Representatives. He was acquitted by the Senate both times.

Soludo Reveals How Much Anambra Makes Monthly, Says It’s “Very Low”

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has revealed the amount of money internally generated in the state on monthly basis, which he said is far below expectation.

The Governor stated this while inaugurating the State Board of Internal Revenue on Wednesday.

The Board, which was inaugurated at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia on Thursday, is Chaired by Mr. Richard Madiebo, and is primarily tasked with increasing the state’s internally-generated revenue.

Executive Directors of the Board include Dr. Greg Ugochukwu Ezeilo (Anambra South), Dr. Christian Madubuko (Anambra North), Mr Benjamin Anierobi Okafor (Anambra Central).

Other members include the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, Commissioner for Finance, Mr Ifeatu Onejeme, Commissioner for Lands, Prof. Ofornze Amucheazi, Commissioner for Transport, Mrs Pat Igwebuike.

Others are Mr. Don Adizuo, Secretary/Head of Legal Dept., Mr Chika Oformma, Head of Assessment and Mrs Juliet Nwakpudolu, Head of High Net Individual Assessment Department.

Speaking after the inauguration, Soludo pointed out that the Internal Revenue Service is the lifeblood of all government operations, emphasising that if it doesn’t work, nothing works.

The Governor noted that results of IGR are not even close to 50% of what he anticipated to achieve.

He stressed that he expected to have the revenue body double its initial revenue within its first four months, which did not happen.

He maintained that the state government should be making more than 3 billion naira per month, which has yet to happen, and that the 2023 budget is expected to generate 4 billion naira per month, stressing that the Anambra state government is running a deficit on IGR, which is one of the key projections.

He said, “FAAC allocations are unpredictable, but we have an economy with an estimated value of up to 5 trillion naira.

“It is critical to highlight the enormous potentials that exist, as well as the appropriate benchmarks and targets.

“If we have a 5 trillion naira estimate and collect 1%, that is 60 billion naira per year. If we collect 2%, that’s 120 billion naira per year, or a minimum of ten billion naira per month on average. If we receive 5% of income, we will have 300 billion naira per year.

“As of Monday, we were dangling around 1 billion naira per month, which is extremely low.”

“You can see how far we are doing in relation to the potentials that exist.”

He added that “The internal revenue service requires a 180 per cent turnaround. The current path we are taking will not get us very far because we have been trying it for a year.

“Members of this Board must get to work right away because there is a lot of work ahead of them.

“We will interface and evaluate performance every three months. It will have a high mortality rate and a three-month life span. If this board fails, we will disband it and create a new one.”

According to the Governor, the Terms of Reference of the Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue include, “Providing general policy guidelines regarding the functions of the State Internal Revenue Service and supervising implementation of such policies, ensuring the effective and optimum collection of all revenue, including levies and penalties due to the State Government under the relevant Federal and State Laws, doing all such things that may be deemed necessary and expedient for the assessment and collection of all revenue, accounting for all amount so collected in a manner to be prescribed by the Governor.

Others include “making recommendations where appropriate to the Joint Tax Board on tax policy, tax reform, tax registration, tax treaties and exemption as may be required from time to time, appointing, promoting, transferring and imposing discipline on employees of the State Internal Revenue Service, making Recommendations to the Governor regarding the terms and conditions of employment and remuneration of staff of the Internal Revenue Service, controlling the management of the State Internal Revenue Service on matters of policy, subject to the provisions of any regulations setting up the State Internal Revenue Service and doing such other things are in the opinion of the Board necessary to ensure the efficient performance of the functions of the State Revenue Service under the Law.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Board thanked the Governor for the confidence in them and promised that the Board will live up to expectations.
