2019: NGO Ask Bauchi People To Vote Politicians ‎Committed To WASH Program

A Non Governmental Organization (NGO), known as Network for Water and Sanitation in Nigeria (NEWSAN), has called on the electorate in Bauchi State to vote for politicians who are committed to providing potable water, improving environmental sanitation and hygiene in the state.
The call was made by NEWSAN Team Leader Mr. Ezekiel Sukumun during an interactive  meeting with community members drawn from Misau, Darazo, Dambam and Giade local government areas of Bauchi central senatorial district, tagged ‘VOTE4WASH’, held at Misau Local Government Council secretariat in Misau.‎
Mr.  Ezekiel Sukumun, said the meeting was organized  by WaterAid Nigeria and funded by Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).saying it  aimed at improving Water supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), in the state, which he stated are major problems in Nigeria, especially in the rural areas.
Sukumun stated that the NGO would encourage community members in the state to distribute pledge cards to aspirants seeking various elective offices to make written commitments that If given the mandate, they would execute the WASH projects
Contributing,  a participant at the meeting and Chairman of Darazo Local Government Area, Abdullahi Hamza, said that water, sanitation, and hygiene must be taken seriously in all the local government areas in the state.
He called on other local government councils in the state to emulate what is happening in Dass LGA of the state, saying that, “if you go to Dass Local Local Government Area of the state, you can’t see any dirty but clean environment, clean water and toilets all over the area.”
He then called on the government to construct more public toilets in all local government areas in the state as well as an enactment of a law against open defecation.
Hamza also made a case for the provision of potable water both in urban and rural areas of the state to prevent outbreak of diseases such as cholera, among others, in the state.
In her remarks, , a representative of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Hajiya Ladi Habu, called on government to intervene to put a stop to people of digging wells and suckaway in the same place in their houses.
