Few days after President Buhari claimed that herdsmen in Nigeria only wield sticks and machetes, the Nigerian Army has paraded a herdsman, one Idi Gemu arrested in connection with the killings in Benue state.

President Muhammadu Buhari while in America last week had told President Trump that herdsmen in Nigeria only go about with sticks and Machetes occasionally while herding their cattle.

But Idi Gemu was arrested in Adagu village in Guma Local government of Benue State by Men of the 72 Special Forces Battalion with an AK47 rifle.

Idi Gemu who spoke in Hausa told newsmen in Makurdi that the gun was not his own but belonged to a friend he met while looking for his sheep in Nasarawa/Benue borders.

He said he came from Adadu village in Obi LGA of Nasarawa state to search for his missing sheep. He found them among some Fulani guys who were staying in Tyokula in Guma area.

Because it was late to go back to Obi as at the time he found his sheep, I do decided to stay back with his new found friend . So it was while he was sleeping that soldiers came, searched the house, found the gun in the room and arrested him while his friend escaped.

But lieutenant Col. Suleiman Mohammad recalled that on the 26th of April, men of the 72 Battallion arrested three herdsmen militia in Guma LGA and as a follow up to that they increased their tempo leading the arrest of Idi Gemu.

According to him, their investigations are pointing to the fact that the three herdsmen arrested earlier and Idi are having the same sponsors even though he refused to name the sponsors.

He pledged the commitment of the army  to do everything possible to protect lives and property of Nigerians.

He further urged members of the public to feed them with adequate and timely information to enable them carry out their operations successfully.
