The people of Kono in Khana Local government Area of the State have declared that they would cast their votes for all the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s Re-run National/State Election.

Speaking during a rally organized by the Kono Chapter of Khana Ward 11, PDP at the Kono Town Square on Wednesday, the Paramount Ruler of Nyokuru Kono, Chief Peter Lene Nwi-Ue said the community decided to throw its weight behind the ruling party because of the lofty programmes of Governor Nyesom Wike.

He assured that all eligible voters of the community will come out enmasse to participate and vote for the PDP candidates, come Saturday.

Chief Nwi-Ue who joined in the victory dance round the town, described the statement credited to former Governor Rotimi Amaechi that the military would be deployed to all the election venues as mere propaganda, urging all Kono people to disregard the threat, arguing that the police is the only agency statutorily authorized to provide security at the poling centers.

Other prominent members of Kono Community who spoke at the occasion include the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the State PDP Chairman, Rev. Jerry Needam who was gratefully elated at the huge crowd that graced the event.

“I feel so happy to see Kono people empty into our ancient town square for this august event.  This town square represents a lot of things for Kono people. You see the people in one accord resolve to support the Governor of Rivers State, Chief (Barr) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

“You see Kono people unanimously resolve to vote PDP and they have also passed a vote of no confidence on APC.  They have completely rejected the APC because the APC and all of its candidates represent nothing but darkness and Kono people do not want to live in darkness” said Needam, a serving Minister of the Christ Army Church of Nigeria (CACN).

He went on, “The people of Kono are saying that they do not want to remain in Egypt and want to go to the Promised Land and only the PDP would make that possible”.

Rev. Needam who received standing ovation while he spoke amid shouts of ‘Voice of Kono’ from the crowd, stated that events from 1994 and 1995 reminded the Kono people of the role of the Senatorial Candidate of the APC (Rivers South East), Sen. Magnus Abe in the massacre of Ogoni people.

“Ogoni people have a phobia for the military.  When they see the military, it reminds them of the death of Ken Saro Wiwa.  And because Magnus instigated the military to come and slaughter defenseless Ogoni people including pregnant women, they said they cannot be part of that Party or anybody that spills blood” he said, adding that the size of the crowd explained that there was no one remaining in the APC.

A one-time Deputy Governorship Candidate under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria ACN, Hon. Serekara Wifa in his speech noted that Kono people threw their weight behind the PDP as, according to him, Governor Wike had impacted positively on the lives of Kono people.

“This event is a mere reaffirmation of our support for Governor Wike and the PDP because he has demonstrated in many ways that he means well for Kono in particular and Ogoni in general” he said.

Solidarity speeches were also delivered by Khana LGA Youth Leader of the Grassroot Development Initiative (GDI), Engr Gibson Lumene, Mrs. Theresa Wiko, Mrs Promise Jerry-Needam and the Khana PDP Ward 11 Chairman, Mr. Maxwell Ekomtu.
