The Igbo Women Assembly, a non-governmental body of women in the South-East, has cried out over the activities of Fulani herdsmen in parts of the zone.

The leader of the group, Chief Mrs Maria Okwor, said women in South-East were worried over rising herdsmen attacks.

Some women in the zone have been killed, raped or maimed by the herdsmen, the woman leader said.

Okwor urged the Federal Government to address the development, which she described as ‘injustice’.

“IWA is extremely troubled at the level of insecurity of our people. The Fulani herdsmen have permeated every nook and cranny of the South-East, causing havoc.

“They have engaged in kidnapping, maiming, raping women and killing them, as well as killing the owners of the farms after destroying their farm lands.

“IWA calls on the Federal Government to quickly intervene to bring this injustice to a halt as it is unacceptable to us women.”

The Assembly also condemned the abduction and forceful marriage of underage Christian girls by Northern Muslims.

“Christian girls who are underage are now being abducted and forced to marry Muslims.

“We aware that freedom of religion is enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but parents of these abductees experience severe trauma,” Okwor said.

The group expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s war on corruption, urging the President to ensure that “all those who looted our treasury and impoverished Nigeria are made to refund the stolen monies and face punishment”.
