Imo Guber Primaries: Protesters Shut Down PDP Secretariat

Activities at the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Imo State, along Owerri/Okigwe Road were yesterday permanently put to a halt by protesters over what they described as injustice melted to Senator Ifeanyi Araraume during the PDP Governorship primaries.The protesters made up of men, women and youths from the 27 local government areas of the state numbering thousands stormed the party’s secretariat in Owerri, the state capital city carrying placards with inscriptions “give Araraume his mandate”, “give us the original result”, “Araraume sure-bet for PDP”, ‘’No Araraume no PDP” .

The situation which lasted for several hours resulted in an unprecedented traffic jam on the road as motorist were subjected to a long wait, while ordinary people resorted to long trekking to their destination points.

However, detachments of armed Policemen and other security agencies in the state were immediately drafted to guard the guard secretariat from being touched by the protesters.

As at 4.30 pm yesterday, the PDP secretariat was still under lock and key with the security men still guarding it.Addressing the mammoth crowd before some of the PDP executive during the protest, a spokesperson for the protesters and a coordinator of Araraume’s Destiny Campaign Organization, Alhaji Ahmed Ozurumba condemned the injustice meted to Araraume, the winner of the last Governorship primary election in the state.

He noted that Imo people were sure Araraume won the election, insisting that the people of the state would not accept anything done in the contrary to deny the Senator his victory.

Ozurumba maintained that Araraume is the only man that could govern the state and stop the perennial suffering of the masses.Also speaking during the protest, a chieftain of PDP in Imo State, Hon. Jasper Ndubuaka frowned at the plot by some PDP members to deny Senator Araraume his victory at the governorship primaries, adding that the entire people of the state had spoken against that
through a protest.

He said that the demonstration by over 300,000 people of Imo State showed that they stood on the victory of Sen. Araraume and would not accept anything in the contrary.

Responding to the grievances of the protesters, the Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP,  Sir.George Egu assured them that having listened to their comments, he would channel it to the appropriate quarters, with a view to ensuring that justice was done in the matter.

He said: “PDP want to occupy Imo Government house comes 2015, and would not allow anything that would frustrate this effort”.

Egu appealed to the protesters to go about their protest in the most peaceful manner  to avoid any breach of the peace in the state.
