UK Deports 500 From 29,000 Nigerians Listed For Deportation

Not less than 500 Nigerians on Wednesday landed at the Murtala
Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos due to deportation by the
United Kingdom Government.
The deportees came into the country on Wednesday morning with clear
disappointment.
Though, the Nigeria High Commission in London on October 24, 2015
disclosed that about 29, 000 Nigerians had been penciled for
deportation by the UK based on several conditions.
Ag. Nigerian High Commissioner in London, Olukunle Bamgbose, said, “I
think about 29, 000 Nigerians have been designated to be deported.”
But according to reports, many of them were deported for illegal stay permits.
One of the deportees who refused to disclose his identity said, he was
arrested by British Police and was denied access to take any of his
personal belongings before being deported.
The Federal Government frowned at the mass deportation, stating that
efforts must be made by the UK government to ensure those being
deported are really Nigerians, medically fit to travel and have a role
to play in the country, that is, they should be able to fit into the
nation’s society.
“First, we must ensure that they are really Nigerians; they are
medically fit to travel; all the legal processes must have been
completed and that they have role to play in Nigeria.
“You do not expect someone who has not been to Nigeria for 30 years to
40 years, and does not have any family and you want to deport him.
“He will constitute social problems to us in Nigeria; so these are the
sore points at this moment that we have,’’ the envoy said.
