The recent resignation of the Members of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Nation Working Committee members may not after all be because of INEC’s report on them, a chieftain of the party from Adamawa State and member of the Adamawa State PDP stakeholders, Dr. Umar Ardo have said.

According to Dr. Ardo he said; “I do not believe that the current so-called resignation of PDP Members of the NWC is because of INEC’s report on their mode of elections. When did INEC’s reports ever become a matter of serious concern to both the PDP and INEC itself? If it is really because of INEC’s report, then what about the PDP’s Ward, LGAs and State Chapters in 9 states of the federation which INEC’s report declared as unconstitutional? In three separate letters dated March 5th, 14th and 2nd April, 2012 signed by the Commission’s Secretary and addressed to the PDP National Chairman, INEC rejected the mode of election of the party’s Wards and LGA’s organs as unconstitutional and advised the party’s National Secretariat not to proceed with its staged-congresses until it re-conducted the Wards and LGAs congresses in the states affected. However, the party flagrantly disobeyed this directive and continued its congresses at the states, zonal and even national convention with delegates composited by these Wards and LGAs chapters.”

Ardo added further that; “These states include Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Anambra, Nassarawa, Plateau, Lagos, Kogi and Sokoto. Dissatisfied with the non-compliance of the party to the directives of INEC, particularly as regards to my state of Adamawa, I petitioned the NWC on the matter. When my petition was scornfully ignored by the party leadership, I filed in a law suit against the party at the FCT High Court asking the court to determine whether INEC had the powers to write those letters, whether the letters had force of authority on the PDP and if so whether PDP was bound to comply. And if the court answered my questions affirmatively, then I prayed the court to declare the EXCOs in all the Wards, LGAs and of the State in Adamawa as null and void; and to order the NWC of the PDP to go back and re-conduct congresses in all the organs of the party in the state. The case was assigned to Justice Eyang. Unfortunately, from the proceedings in the court, it seems to me as if the FCT Judiciary, or particularly Justice Eyang, was afraid of cases involving the PDP, the matter is still lying dormant and undecided before the court more than a year now since I instituted it. I even applied that the case be reassigned to another Judge but my application was equally ignored by the then Chief Justice of the FCT, Justice Lawan Gumi.”

Speaking further he said; “Thus, to the best of my knowledge, with the exception of Adamawa state because of my tenacity and to get me withdraw my court case, none of these 9 states re-conducted congresses as directed by INEC to legitimize the EXCOs of their organs to date. It is also of note that this was exactly what happened between 2008 and 2011, during which INEC wrote 4 letters to the PDP stating that EXCOs of the party organs in 8 states of the federation were illegally composited and advised that they be re-conducted in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines. PDP did not comply. Yet INEC accepted and filled in all the nominees submitted to it by those illegitimate EXCOs in the 2011 general election. Many of these nominees are now in public offices as so-called legitimately elected officials.”

“Now that INEC’s report has suddenly acquired some importance and authority to make members of NWC resign, then it is imperative that the Commission insists, and the party complies, that its directives as contained in those letters be carried out in the remaining 8 states of the federation, with Adamawa having being so far the sole compliant (thanks to my dogged fight). This is what will convince me, as a party member, and Nigerians that the current wave of resignations in the membership of PDP’s NWC is because of INEC’s report, and that Rule of Law as regards INEC’s authority on political parties, has returned in the affairs of our party,” Ardo said.
