Collapsed building in Owerri

More buildings constructed by the Governor Rochas Okorocha-led administration in Imo State have continued to collapse just few months after their construction.

This time around, the multi-million naira Imo Film Academy constructed and commissioned by Governor Okorocha of Imo State penultimate weekend (November 14, 2014) at the premises of the Imo State College of Advanced Professional Studies, ICAPS, along Egbu Road Owerri, has collapsed.

This is less than four months after a new security gate being constructed behind the main entrance gate to the Government House collapsed.

Some of the security men from the Imo State Civil Guard who mounted road block at the gate of the building told our reporter that the building collapsed either Saturday or Sunday.

The security men who refused to allow anybody access to the collapsed site of the building, could not confirm whether there was any casualty or not, because according to them, the debris had to be cleared for them to know.

Okorocha had set up the Film Village as part of the measures to promote the identity and cultural heritage of the Igbos and made ace actress, Nkeiru  Silvanus as the director-general of the centre.

Every attempt made to reach Nkeiru Silvanus proved abortive as several calls put through her phones could not be answered.

It would be recalled that similar incident happened in June this year at the Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri when dozens of students of the University escaped death by whiskers when a storey building lecture hall and office complex being constructed in the university campus collapsed.

According to findings, the twin lecture hall, located opposite St. Joseph’s Catholic Chaplaincy, IMSU, was also being constructed by the state government.

According to eye-witness account, the building, which had been completed and roofed, caved out from its base after the POP ceilings were put in place by the contracting firm. It was gathered that crack sign and sound awoke the sense of the students, who were taking shelter by the building. They were said to have hurriedly run out of the vicinity; and just in a jiffy, the building caved out.

Though no casualty was recorded, the rate at which structures are collapsing in the state is becoming alarming. A hotel in Okigwe being constructed by the state government also collapsed.
