From Msughshima Andrew, Makurdi

As Nigeria join other nations of the world to mark this year’s International Women Day celebration, the Federal Government has been urged to synergize with other nations to rescue the female students abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in Chibok and Dapchi villages.

A chattered Tax Administrator and Executive Chairman of the Benue State Board of Internal Revenue Service, Chief Mrs. Mimi Azape-Orubibi made this call, yesterday, while speaking with Journalists on the significance of the International Women Day Celebration.

Mrs. Azape-Orubibi also faulted the upbringing of the insurgents who derive pleasure in abducting female students adding that the integrity of Nigerian Government would be questioned if the abducted girls were not rescued.

The BIRS boss expressed disatisfaction over government’s efforts in handling the two cases saying no parent who have lost a child in that circumstance would be satisfied with what is being done.

“If you have carried a child for nine months and gone through the labour  room experience and take that child to school and the next thing, they tell you the child is adopted, you will not be satisfied. It is not a good thing but government has taken a commendable step to say they will deploy security to all schools.”

While she charged parent on proper upbringing of their children from the family, she also expressed confidence that if more women are given more opportunities where they will showcase their talents, those who are against educating the girl child and are engaging in adoption of girls from schools will stop.

Orubibi who said representation of women politically, socially, economically is very low stated that on a day like this, “it is very important to demand for our rights”.

“The Governor has supported the women in Benue. He is up with 35% affirmative action for Benue women and he has done well in this regard and if given another chance, he will do better. I am happy to be a beneficiary of that,” she said.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Press For Progress”, Mrs Orubibi said we are pressing forward for gender parity, pressing for improvement in our personal life and to be professionals in our endeavours and urged every woman to be up and doing.

She also demanded for more respect among the political class for women and called for an upward review of the 35 percent Beijing Declaration Affirmative Action for women.

“I commend Governor Ortom’s women friendly disposition. He has in deed requested that where a woman is contesting an election, the forms should be given to her free. I also commend the wife because where a man is doing good, a woman is behind him.

“So, Ortom is a mentor to me on this day of women’s day celebration because he has brought more women to limelight in Benue state”, she added.
